Welcome to the Educational Data Mining Conference 2027

Mining for Meaning: Human Agency, Values, and Learning in the Age of AI
Educational Data Mining (EDM) has developed powerful methods for modeling learners, predicting educational outcomes, identifying patterns of interaction, personalizing learning experiences, and informing educational decision-making. As educational environments become increasingly data-rich and AI-mediated, the field has an opportunity to extend these strengths toward deeper questions about how learning and teaching unfold, how educational technologies shape human agency, and how cultural contexts and values influence what our models capture, recommend, and optimize.
This year’s conference invites the EDM community to examine the relationships among data, models, human agency, culture, values, learning, and teaching. In particular, we invite the community to engage with five broad questions:
- What are we modeling, and what mechanisms explain the patterns we observe?
- How can educational data and AI support rather than diminish human agency in learning and teaching?
- For whom, and in which cultural, institutional, and social contexts, are our models and measures valid?
- What educational and human values are embedded in what our models measure, recommend, and optimize?
- When and under what conditions, can computational models help us understand human learning itself?
